Berwick Academy, a secondary school in Berwick-upon-Tweed, invited us to their recent careers fair to inspire students considering careers in digital, data and technology, particularly in DWP.
Working to transform government
DWP has ambitious goals to transform how we interact with the public on a massive scale. To do this we need talented people, with the passion to drive genuine change.
Building on the success of our recent STEM event at our Newcastle hub, Berwick Academy invited us to speak to students across all year groups who had shown an interest in the future of technology.
The careers fair gave us an opportunity to start engaging the next generation of digital, data and technology professionals.
It's all about finding your fit
The main message we tried to get across to students is that there’s a huge range of careers available in DWP Digital. Building world-leading digital services requires a range of skills from user research through to software development, and finding a career in digital, data and technology is all about finding your fit.
The students arrived keen to get the most out of us and keep us on our toes, with challenging questions covering technology, management, and running an effective workplace.
By the final session we'd covered topics far beyond what we had planned, including specific coding language, emerging technology, and the importance of involving users in designing modern services. It’s safe to say we were very impressed with their digital knowledge!
Our next outreach
With STEM events, school visits, and career fairs under our belts, the next step is to offer genuine work experience in DWP Digital.
Next week we have two students from Gateshead and Jarrow with us for the week to get a rounded experience of digital, data and technology careers in DWP Digital.
